MANUIA AND COCA COLA: FORGING AHEAD IN LATIN AMERICA FOR A “WORLD WITHOUT WASTE”

Client: The Coca-Cola Company, multinational beverage company

Project: Life cycle analysis (LCA) of different types of returnable and non-returnable bottles.

Here at Manuia we quantified and measured the environmental impact of returnable and non- returnable bottles in terms of their carbon footprint, water footprint, and generation of waste throughout their entire life cycle. This was done as part of the development of Coca Cola Company “A World Without Waste” strategy, whose target is to recycle 100% of bottles it places on the market
by 2030. This impact comparison was applied in Chile, Argentina, Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, and Paraguay and the results quantitatively showed the benefits in the environmental impact of the returnable bottles. This made it possible to develop strategies for impact management and communications aimed at relevant stakeholders, such as consumers, clients, regulators, and opinion leaders, on the different target benefits of the company returnable and recyclable bottles. In addition, this allowed them to boost the company portfolio management and its bottlers in the region and enhance the strategic importance of the returnable bottles while bringing them even more commercial benefits than ever before.
